| Work paying tribute to the thousands of men who came from the former French West African territories to fight the war of the “toubabs”, or white people.
Entitled “The Constellation of Pain”, this sculpture by Christian Lapie was commissioned by the Aisne Departmental Council – as part of the commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the Chemin des Dames battles.
The tribute to the Senegalese infantry men is a tribe of calm, unchanging sentries. According to the sculptor they have such a presence that they seem to have always been there, that they are part of the scenery and its history.
